The views expressed in this book are the author’s own but he kfH9Y%bOy
acknowledges his debt to his many immediate colleagues in Halcrow and to y}3

so many tunnellers and others around the world for several of the thoughts 1c1e+H
which have prompted the book. The author accepts full responsibility for @^w!% ?J
any misunderstanding. The account may be criticised as unduly orientated 9aW8wYL~b
towards the British and European examples. This is justified by selecting ][s*~VK;
examples for which the circumstances are generally familiar; lessons learned R4hav
may well have more universal application. The Channel Tunnel, for >b[4
example, provides many examples of meritorious engineering with less <FMuWHY
meritorious management. An exemplary account of its engineering geology (!^N~ =e;
(Harris et al. 1996) attracts numerous references on account of its depth and J@=!w[v+
breadth.
