Dear Colleague:

140 years after the first issue of Nature, Nature Publishing Group launches its second multidisciplinary journal – Nature Communications.

Nature Communications is an online-only, multidisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing high quality primary research in all areas of the biological, physical and chemical sciences. Papers published represent important advances of significance to specialists within each field. The journal also offers authors the option of publishing under open access following the payment of an article processing charge.

Developmental biology
Organogenesis relies on SoxC transcription factors for the survival of neural and mesenchymal progenitors
Bhattaram, P. et al. Nat. Commun. 1:9 doi: 10.1038/ncomms1008 (2010)

During development Sox transcription factors play important roles in the determination of cell fate. In this study Bhattaram and colleagues show that Sox4, Sox11 and Sox12 act redundantly in mouse development and are important for the maintenance of neural and mesenchymal progenitor cells.

Polymer chemistry
Sequence-regulated vinyl copolymers by metal-catalyzed step-growth radical polymerization
Satoh, K. et al. Nat. Commun. 1:6 doi: 10.1038/ncomms1004 (2010)

The synthesis of sequence-regulated copolymers continues to challenge polymer chemists. Here step-growth radical polymerisation of designed abc and abcc monomers leads to vinyl copolymers with repeating ABC and ABCC sequences

Photonics
Mapping multiple photonic qubits into and out of one solid-state atomic ensemble
Usmani, I. et al. Nat. Commun. 1:12 doi: 10.1038/ncomms1010 (2010).

Quantum communication applications require memories capable of storing multiple qubits. To implement scalable architectures for this purpose, Usmani and coworkers turn to a rare-earth doped silicate, in which they demonstrate coherent and reversible mapping of 64 optical modes at the single photon level.

In celebration of our launch, all subscribed content has been made freely available.*
