Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve S-/#3
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction 'j3'n0o
systems requires the determination of two important twu6z5<!-=
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping Y+j KP*ri
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical C95,!q
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds .4Ny4CMHZ
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the |wb7`6g
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding {f&ga
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause |fI%L9
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction _uu:)%
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all ]czy8n$+
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of wwAT@=X*}
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential )[K3p{4
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic R]Yhuo9,&n
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. ibuI/VDF
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties A zle ;\l`
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a |"-,C}O
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected }1W$9\%
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been Y@4vQm+
presented.
