该排名由《泰晤士报》高等教育专刊和英国著名高等教育研究机构QS(Quacquarelli Symonds)联合进行，首次出版于2004年，之后每年更新一次。它包括全球前500名学校的综合排名，基于教学、师资、就业率和国际学生比例等一系列指标，还包括在科学、技术、生物医学、社会科学和人文艺术等五个专业领域的前300名学校排名。与其他排名相比，泰晤士报高等教育-QS排名囊括了更多的非美国大学，尤其是英国的大学。
