The slaking mechanism is closely related to the collapse mechanism that occurs in loose soils during static or dynamic loading. There are a number of important case histories on the subject matter. The flooding causes the pore-water pressures to increase, which leads to a decrease in effective stress. The decrease in effective stress causes the stress paths to track onto the collapse surface; consequently, the soils have the tendency to undergo large and rapid plastic deformations, specifically volumetric compression. The collapse surface is in many ways analogous to a yield locus in classical elastic-plastic soil mechanics. qQ@| Cj
As you know, almost all constitutive models for soils are formulated on the assumption that a decrease in effective stress is associate with volumetric expansion (i.e. heave). There are some constitutive models that capture the collapse mechanism. Incidentally, a former student of Morgenstern (graduate of University of Alberta) and employee of GEO-SLOPE formulated such a model (referenced in QUAKE book: Gu). Unfortunately the constitutive model does not lend itself well to implementation in a commercial software package. In fact, I'm not sure that there is a commercial package on the market that captures the collapse mechanism adequately. 1!#85SMx
