Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve ( /_Z^m9
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction V V~Kgy
systems requires the determination of two important dLu3C-.(
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping /aMeKM[L`
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical <+7-^o_
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds 6n.C!,Zmn
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the z9*7fT
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding ]?2&d[
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause JMYM}G
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction SJI+$L\'
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all cM+s)4TPL
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of D)LqkfJ}z^
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential ^sVB:?
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic kKSn^qL*
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. F;dUqXUu
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties $Xo_C_:B
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a )x&}{k6 %
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected x42m+5/
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been W-U[7n
presented.
