Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve #PJHwvr
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction Nm.G,6<J
systems requires the determination of two important \Hs*46@TC
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping aB*'DDlx"r
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical 5z~O3QX
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds P]mJ01@'
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the rQb=/@-
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding r\."=l
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause \fD)|
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction ZCC T
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all :FN-.1C
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of :H(wW
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential M8{J
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic Q dPqcw4+X
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. {IgLH`@
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties J\%SAit@
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a MX)mm^A
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected JOUZ"^v
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been qe3d,!
presented.
