dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction /7Q|D sa
systems requires the determination of two important P]E-Wp'p
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping 6b|?@
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical M `xiC
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds G#M)5'Q]U
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the ,$P,x
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding C0rf
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause ny={OhP-
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction s27IeF3
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all Y.tx$%
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of hsZ/Vnn`
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential 4w4B\Na>l
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic ~%TWF+
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. ,Kit@`P%
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties nla6QlFYn*
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a 8`Ya7c>
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected 0D X_*f
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been 4zug9kFK
presented.
