Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve wg0.i?R-]
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction !&p:=}s
systems requires the determination of two important }IkEyJsk
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping +{ !t~BW
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical l(\8c><m
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds DeQ'U!?+N
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the vqz#V=J{
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding 4 ~YQ\4h=
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause +gCy@_2;
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction 6-14Htsk6
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all -G#@BtB2+
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of EiP&Y,vT
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential PFgjWp"Y
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic ]G~N+\8]U
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. *Ne2l`!1m
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties ikG9l&n
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a JD`;,Md
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected 3l(;Pt-yI
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been >@"3Q`
presented.
