Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve >^N:A
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction 0k [6
systems requires the determination of two important b*fflJ
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping 49GCj`As
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical _r'M^=yx[
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds N4-J !r@#~
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the ,iUx'U
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding 4pv:u:Z
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause #m>mYp8E.5
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction wYG0*!Vj
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all K(S/D(\

over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of Eq{TZV
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential Pq%cuT%
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic pT tX[CE
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. O2f2Fb$B7
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties o5R40["
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a nrBitu,
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected w4a7c
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been v(~m!8!TI
presented.
