Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve nNP{>\x;"
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction -guVl4 V
systems requires the determination of two important ;e#bl1%#
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping r$/.x6g//
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical ]/TqPOi:
analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds "v[?`<53^l
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the nep-?7x
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding jHx)q|2\
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause U66}nN9
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction wPRs.(]_
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all .4cOMiG
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of ;sZHE&+
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential 5Vu@gRk_
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic 'i7!"Y6>
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. bqI| wGCA"
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties >=!$(JgX
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a yq,%ey8
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected t=6Wk4
from the sites close to the Sabarmati river belt have been ATq-&1hs
presented.
