Design of geotechnical engineering problems that involve @K{1O|V
dynamic loading of soils and soil–structure interaction Ll4/P[7:?
systems requires the determination of two important {p -q&k&R|
parameters, the shear modulus and the damping j0^%1
of the soils. The recent developments in the numerical [=f(u

analyses for the nonlinear dynamic responses of grounds SvE3E$*
due to strong earthquake motions have increased the /Z':wu\
demand for the dynamic soil properties corresponding !$}:4}56F
to large strain level also. Further, the most common cause vRp#bScc
of ground failure during earthquakes is the liquefaction \v|nRn,`-
phenomenon which has produced severe damage all xw[KP [(
over the world. This paper summarizes the methods of 2/[J<c\G
determining the dynamic properties as well as potential r57CyO
for liquefaction of soils. Parameters affecting the dynamic PHZ+u@AA6@
properties and liquefaction have been brought out. k'H+l]=
A simple procedure of obtaining the dynamic properties {,V .IDs8[
of layered ground has been highlighted. Results of a >iE/t$%1
series of cyclic triaxial tests on liquefiable sands collected M.b1=Y

presented.
