The views expressed in this book are the author’s own but he OqEg{o5 a&
acknowledges his debt to his many immediate colleagues in Halcrow and to S3j]{pZ(z
so many tunnellers and others around the world for several of the thoughts c n\k`8
which have prompted the book. The author accepts full responsibility for xI/{)I1f
any misunderstanding. The account may be criticised as unduly orientated [HC8-N^.}
towards the British and European examples. This is justified by selecting 4jC4X*
examples for which the circumstances are generally familiar; lessons learned z5|e\Z
may well have more universal application. The Channel Tunnel, for icKg7-$N
example, provides many examples of meritorious engineering with less h,!G7V
meritorious management. An exemplary account of its engineering geology .}L-c>o"o
(Harris et al. 1996) attracts numerous references on account of its depth and WHpUjyBP
breadth.
