This earthquake occurred in the northeastern part of China, near the coast. The epicenter was centered about 140 kilometers southeast of Beijing, in the vicinity of Tangshan. The first earthquake, magnitude 7.5, was followed by a major aftershock 15 hours later. According to official sources, the two earthquakes killed over 240,000 people, although some estimates of the death toll are as high as 655,000. Over 799,000 people were injured. Aftershocks in the 5.0-5.5 range continued after the main shock. Damage extended as far as Beijing. This is probably the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the last four centuries, and the second greatest in recorded history. N:BL=}V

The worse natural disaster in recorded history, at least in terms of lives lost, was caused by an earthquake in Hausien in the Shensi Province of China in 1556. The earthquake devastated 98 counties and eight provinces of Central China. The destruction spanned an area of 500 miles, and in some counties the average death toll was 60 percent of the population. A total of 830,000 people lost their lives, most of them from the collapse of poorly constructed houses. 北川县死亡众多,主要是由地理地貌条件决定的,居民沿河而居,沿河两岸为高陡山体,起伏达700m以上,一旦发生大地震引起山崩滑坡及泥石流,势如定向爆破，覆巢无完卵.

至少影响不会比唐山的小。

不是我迷信美国的科技，美国的判断更为客观。反而言之，如果美国地震，则中国国家地震局的解译比美国更可靠。不识庐山真面目，只缘身在此山中。
