A reference list about papers on rainfall&slope stability compiled ten year ago is attached in this post as follows. Loss of suction, presence of seepage force, or static liquefaction of loose materials are usually considered to be common causes of rain induced slope failures. However, these mechanisms may not be universely true. Slope failure mechanisms under rainfall are still heavily arguable. Since even this basic problem with respect to failure mechanism is not well understood at present, slope stability analysis in most cases may not be representative. If such unquantified slope stability analysis is to be carried out, a combination of Seep/w and Slope/w seems to be the best one can do at present. Of course, other more refined method that using unsaturated soil consitutive models are also possible. However, the quality of these constititive models is not assured. More researches are expected in this area for better landslide risk management.
