Deadline : 2012. 1. 16.
Advertised Job Title: Geotechnical Engineer/Numerical Modeller
Reference Number: Q02312
Classification: CSOF5-6
Salary Range: $86K - $116K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Location: Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies, Pullenvale,
Brisbane
Tenure: 3 years
Relocation Assistance: May be provided to the successful candidate
Residency Status: Open to International Residents
Role Overview:
As part of an ongoing international collaboration project, CSIRO Earth Science and Resource
Engineering together with our international partners have developed an advanced numerical modelling
tool to predict rock fracturing and its interaction with thermal and hydraulic processes. This tool is
being applied to several industrial areas including mining, geothermal, nuclear waste disposal and
LNG underground storage.
CSIRO and its international partners are currently advancing this numerical technique in various fronts
including 3-dimensional applications and full M-T-H coupling. Because of increasing project
requirements, CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering is seeking a dedicated Geotechnical
Engineer/Numerical Modeller to join its existing multi-disciplinary team to assist in the development of
the numerical tool and its applications to several challenging industry issues.
The successful candidate for this position will have experience in developing 3D numerical code using
Displacement Discontinuity Method for applications to fracture mechanics, rock mechanics, and
mining and geotechnical engineering. Experience of a variety of numerical methods such as FEM,
BEM, DEM will be highly regarded. Especially the knowledge of simulating rock fracturing will be an
advantage.
Duties:
. Develop three-dimensional Displacement Discontinuity code to meet the needs of the
international collaboration project.
.Understand issues in various industries involving coupled rock fracturing processes and apply
the 2D and 3D numerical tools to solve the problems defined by the project team.
. Advance the current understanding and knowledge in coupled fracture mechanics and
contribute to the research field by publications.
.Participate in and contribute to other research projects in the group related to mining and
environmental engineering when required.
Selection Criteria:
Please note: Under CSIRO policy only applicants who meet all the essential criteria can be appointed
Essential Criteria:
1. Doctorate degree in solid mechanics, geomechanics or related field with demonstrated
experience in numerical modelling;
2. Advanced mathematical skills for numerical modelling and understanding of computer coding
in solid mechanics and fracture mechanics;
3. Demonstrated competence and experience in basic computer skills and computer languages
such as FORTRAN and C++;
4. Demonstrated well developed oral and written communication skills and ability to work within a
team environment;
5. Demonstrated capacity to meet deadlines and to deal effectively with competing demands and
resources.
Desirable Criteria
1. Advanced knowledge in rock mechanics, rock fracture mechanics, mining engineering and
geotechnical engineering;
2. Demonstrated ability to develop numerical codes for rock fracturing/breakage simulation.
CSIRO is a values based organisation. In your application and at interview you will need to
demonstrate behaviours aligned to our values of:
. Integrity of excellent science
. Building trust and respect each day
. Initiative to explore new horizons
. Delivering on commitments
. Safety and sustainability
