Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to present criteria and example problems of the current state of practice of =A,B'n\R
seismic design of wood and reinforced masonry buildings. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the >U* p[FGW
provisions of either the Uniform Building Code (UBC), Building Officials and Code Administrators ShC$ue?Q
(BOCA), or Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI), or international code council, ep"{{S5g
international building code (IBC). For consistency of presentation the primary reference, including notations 8'@5X-nD
and definitions, will be to the UBC 97. Included within the presentation on diaphragms are criteria and Szt2 "AR
example problems for both rigid and flexible diaphragms. Also included is the UBC 97 criteria for the `,SL\\%u
analytical definition of rigid versus flexible diaphragms. Wood shear walls and the distribution of lateral iwM x Tty
forces to a series of wood shear walls is presented using Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Masonry slender tgG 8pL
walls (out-of-plane loads) and masonry shear walls (in-plane loads) are presented using Load and Resistance gk| % 4.
Factor Design (LRFD).
