In this paper, a new method of nonlinear dynamic response analysis of structures based on a pattern of selfequilibrating
stresses is given. The theory and procedure of analysis are described in detail. This method can be used to
solve the nonlinear dynamic response of multi-story and high rise frame structures, shear-wall structures, frame-shear wall
structures and multi-story brick structures modeled by different elements with different hysteretic models. The
corresponding examples show that this method is effective and reliable. Especially, the method has great advantage in
dealing with the softening feature of negative stiffness
