Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to present criteria and example problems of the current state of practice of =A,B'n\R !p9BH6$`
seismic design of wood and reinforced masonry buildings. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the >U* p[FGW J4co@=AJ
provisions of either the Uniform Building Code (UBC), Building Officials and Code Administrators ShC$ue?Q #}jf TM
(BOCA), or Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI), or international code council, ep"{{S5g 0 TS:o/{(a
international building code (IBC). For consistency of presentation the primary reference, including notations 8'@5X-nD #b8/gRfS
and definitions, will be to the UBC 97. Included within the presentation on diaphragms are criteria and Szt2 "AR _l/6Qpf
example problems for both rigid and flexible diaphragms. Also included is the UBC 97 criteria for the `,SL\\%u h@Hmo^!9J
analytical definition of rigid versus flexible diaphragms. Wood shear walls and the distribution of lateral iwM x Tty

forces to a series of wood shear walls is presented using Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Masonry slender tgG 8pL o/&:w z
walls (out-of-plane loads) and masonry shear walls (in-plane loads) are presented using Load and Resistance gk| % 4. xt`znNN
Factor Design (LRFD).
