Sign the Boycott Pledge! Boycott the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China!

Whereas, the People’s Republic of China has a long and extensive record of human rights abuses against many of its citizens, including but not limited to those living in Tibet, those seeking true religious freedom and those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT); and

Whereas, the People’s Republic of China has refused to take action on correcting its long-standing human rights abuses; and

Whereas, the People’s Republic of China continues to endanger the lives and welfare of its citizens; and

Whereas, the Olympics — as originally established in the same society and culture which gave birth to the ideals of democracy, pluralism, freedom and conscience — should be a symbol of the strength and dignity of the human soul; and

Whereas, the Olympics’ events in China run counter to its thousands-years-old history; therefore…

I pledge to Boycott the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing by:

Refraining from watching any televised events from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing;
Refraining from purchasing anything which promotes the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing;
Refraining from purchasing products made in China;
Contacting my U.S. House of Representatives member and urging him or her to support H.R. 610, Supporting a U.S. Boycott of the 2008 Olympics (read the resolution).

FRANKFURT, Germany: Olympic judo champion Yvonne Boenisch plans to boycott the opening ceremony at the Beijing Games.

"I want to send a signal and I will not take part in the opening ceremony," the Boenisch told German television network ZDF.

Boenisch said she would also wear a wrist band in protest over China's crackdown in Tibet, but ruled out skipping the games themselves.

"For every athlete taking part in the games is the biggest thing. If there were a boycott, thousands of dreams would be ruined," she said.

German Olympic officials have pledged to send a team to China.Boenisch became the first German woman to win a judo gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

POLITICS touches every facet of human existence and that, inevitably, includes sport.
But when it comes to a discussion of a boycott of the Beijing Olympics, should one small section of the community - an Olympic team - be singled out to make a political statement?

An Olympic boycott would make a strong statement, but not a lasting one.

A sporting boycott alone is unlikely to bring about change in a country where claimed human rights abuses have caused widespread concern.

The experience from 1980 when the United States and several other countries decided not to compete at the Moscow Olympics suggests that a boycott would not bring about change.

The US objected to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan - but that conflict continued years after the Games had been and gone.

What that boycott did achieve was the crushing of the dreams and aspirations of athletes who had dedicated years of their lives, and a considerable amount of taxpayer investment, towards a goal of landing an Olympic medal.

A boycott of the Beijing Games would devastate a new generation of athletes and do little politically.

If a strong message has to be sent to a country then it is better done between political leaders over a sustained period of time.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s many countries removed South Africa from their sporting and economic radars.

It was a protracted and far-reaching action and these sanctions did contribute to bringing about change to that country and eventually the practice of apartheid was broken down.

Perhaps the Olympics could mark a turning point for China.

The eyes of the world are now focused on the most populous country in the world and one would hope that at the end of the Games China might be a less secretive, mysterious place.

Leading up to the opening ceremony and over the course of competition, China will be awash with journalists who will be interested in looking at more than just a gathering of the world's finest athletes.

As the Olympic torch makes a troubled journey around the world, China will be getting a strong message that many people are unhappy with the way it treats some of its own people and those of neighbouring regions.

An Olympic boycott alone would hardly make a more effective message.
