Professor Zienkiewicz is one of the originators of the finite element technique and has since the early 1960s dominated the finite element field internationally. He was elected to the Royal Society some 13 years ago and has continued his active research in the field even though he has retired. He has been extremely supportive of the finite element work at Brunel since 1972 and has been a member of the advisory committee for all the MAFELAP conferences. The initial success of this conference series owed a lot to the sound advice which was received from Professor Zienkiewicz.
Endearing attributes of Professor Zienkiewicz are his positive attitude to research, his enthusiasm for applying finite element techniques to new fields and his support of young people in the field throughout the world.
